Penguins Fall Flat in Softball Doubleheader

By Zachary Lake in Sports

Clark’s softball team lost twice to the Mount Hood Saints in a doubleheader at home Wednesday afternoon.

The undefeated Saints dominated the first game 17-0, and the second 9-1, leaving the Penguins 5-11 for the season.

Sam Oldham delivered Clark’s only score with a hit that brought in Jazmyn Boyd-Clark from third.

Clark had six hits and several scoring opportunities in the final game. Jackie Jones pitched three innings of shutout softball without run support.

Mount Hood scored their first of nine runs in the fourth inning with a double by Teauna Hughes.

The Penguins had a chance to answer in the fourth inning when the Saints threw a wild pitch with Jones on third, but she was tagged out at home plate.

“We came into it with expectations of playing well, but we let the other team get into our heads the first game,” softball coach Mandy Hill said. “As long as we keep learning and growing each game, we’re going to win games.”

Clark will play next in a tournament this weekend hosted by Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon. Clark will compete against the Yakima Valley Yaks and the Green River Gators on Saturday, and the Highline College Thunderbirds and Bellevue College Bulldogs on Sunday.
