Free Children Dental Care

By Sandra Zichterman in News

Clark dental hygiene students are hosting the 8th annual free children’s dental clinic Feb. 7 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This event will take place in The Firstenburg Dental Hygiene Education and Care Center in The Health Sciences Building and is expected to bring in about 100 children according to Dental Hygiene professor, Brenda Walstead.

“It’s great to work with children in need,” Walstead said. “There’s still a lot of children who lack access to care. We’ll treat as many as possible.”

“It’s also a lot of fun,” said Program Secretary Lead, Dawn Stetler. “[The kids] just say funny things, it’s cute.”

The care will be performed under supervision of licensed dentists and will include cleanings, sealants, x-rays, and fluoride for children ages 18 and under. To schedule appointments, call the Dental Hygiene Business Office at 360-992-2158.

Clark was recently approved to offer a Bachelor of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene. The college’s first baccalaureate degree will start in fall 2015. According to Walstead, there are about 130 applicants for the program this year.

The care center recently finished $3.3 million in renovations funded by a variety of entities including the Firstenburg Foundation.
