Clark will host its second annual “A Taste of Scotland” fundraiser dinner January 22 at 5:30 p.m. to raise money for a student’s flight from Scotland and tuition for one year. The event will also be celebrating Scotland’s most renowned poet, Robert Burns, whose 257th birthday is in January.
Tickets cost $100 per person. The event will feature a silent and live auction, giving away prizes like a vacation in Cancun and lunch and golf with college president Bob Knight, followed by a paddle raise for cash donations.
Clark doubled its fundraising goal at last year’s event by raising $30,000 towards the scholarship.
“We could not have gotten a better participant,” said Russell Brent, who is on the Clark College Foundation board of directors. “She set the bar pretty high.”
Brent and Knight created the event and scholarship last year as a way to celebrate Scottish traditions and increase Clark College’s presence internationally.
Brent said they will be naming the event after Navy veteran Alexander ‘Sandy’ MaKenzie for his “passion for all things Scottish” and for his love of this country.
The Scottish supper will include haggis, a traditional Scottish main course consisting of sheep’s heart, liver and lungs. For those who don’t find sheep innards appealing, there will also be lamb chops, salmon and a potato and turnip dish called tatties and neeps. The meal will be paired with Scottish whisky, music and a reading of Burns’ poem “Address to a Haggis.”
Knight and Brent will be attending the event in full Scottish attire consisting of kilts and tartans, and they encourage guests to dress up as well.
“At the end of the night we will all be arm and arm singing ‘Auld Lang Syne,’” Brent said.
